Crime Stoppers of Wichita-Sedgwick County

Crime Stoppers, a program of the Wichita Metro Crime Commission, encourages community participation in the apprehension of criminals.  Crime Stoppers first began in 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  In 1980 KAKE-TV President Martin Umansky returned from a meeting of national television executives where the program had been presented as a potential public service program opportunity for TV stations.  He contacted then Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, and through a collaboration with many community businesses and leaders Wichita Crime Stoppers was launched.  Now Crime Stoppers of Wichita-Sedgwick County, the program continues to be highly successful because of the cooperative efforts of citizens, media and law enforcement agencies.

By providing anonymous tips through the Crime Stoppers website, P3 app or calling the 24-hour Crime Stopper phone number, citizens are encouraged to SAY SOMETHING if they SEE SOMETHING.  When the tip leads to an arrest a reward is given to the tipster.  It is a completely anonymous, safe way for citizens to help curtail crime and apprehend criminals in our community.

SPEAK UP is Crime Stopper’s school-based program which receives anonymous tips on concerns in schools.  From bullying to potential school shooters to reporting drug dealers, SPEAK UP has given a voice to students, teachers and parents.  SPEAK UP is in every Sedgwick County school district, as well as the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and Andover school district.
